Lake Carriers Association is a trade association representing U.S.-flag vessel operators on the Great Lakes. Based in Rocky River, Ohio, the organization unites 16 member companies that operate 56 U.S.-flag self-propelled vessels and tug/barge units, commonly referred to as lakers, ranging in length from 494 to 1,013.5 feet. Collectively, these ships move more than 115 million tons of cargo annually, with iron ore, limestone, and coal forming the core commodities and cement, salt, sand, and grain among the other cargos. Within the truck transportation sector, the association focuses on legislative and regulatory matters affecting U.S.-flag shipping on the Great Lakes. Founded in 1880, LCA also compiles cargo statistics to illustrate the fleet's role in the regional economy and ports in the United States and Canada.
