The Lakota Language Consortium is a nonprofit organization based in Kyle, South Dakota, focused on the revitalization and preservation of Lakȟótiyapi. Its work centers on developing language learning materials, training teachers, and fostering a positive language community to increase the number of new Lakota speakers in primary and secondary education settings. The organization serves schools and learners across the region, leveraging materials and teacher development programs to expand language instruction and everyday use of Lakota. Since its inception in 2004, LLC has supported thousands of students in more than sixty school systems and has released initiatives such as a new Lakota dictionary and accompanying digital resources, reflecting its aim to provide accessible tools for language learning and community engagement. A recent collaboration with Rural America Initiatives in 2023 illustrates ongoing partnerships to advance intensive Lakota language learning and teacher training.
