Ledge Light Health District serves as the local health department for nine towns in southeastern Connecticut, including East Lyme, Groton, Ledyard, Lyme, New London, North Stonington, Old Lyme, Stonington, and Waterford, and serves about 151,000 residents. Formed as a special unit of government under Connecticut General Statutes Section 19a-241, LLHD consolidates public health services across its member municipalities to operate more efficiently. Based in New London, Connecticut, the district carries out core public health duties such as enforcing the Connecticut Public Health Code, delivering health education, monitoring disease outbreaks, and safeguarding environmental health. The district maintains a small professional staff focused on preventing disease and injury and delivering services ranging from restaurant inspections to smoking cessation programs. In October 2024, LLHD expanded its collaborative efforts by partnering with Old Lyme VNA to administer regular-dose influenza vaccines, in coordination with the Medical Reserve Corps and other local entities.
