LightSail Energy is developing energy storage systems that use compressed air as the storage medium. Energy storage is the key to modernizing the electrical grid world-wide. Energy storage allows intermittent renewable sources, such as solar and wind, to deliver energy on demand. It can level out demand, reducing the need for high-carbon-emitting peaker plants. Energy storage can supply reliable power in places where the grid is undependable or absent. The market for this technology is almost limitless -- if the requirements of low cost, high efficiency and long lifetime can be achieved. Compressed air has long been recognized as having the potential to be the lowest-cost technology for large-scale energy storage. However, the thermodynamic inefficiency of conventional air compressors and motors has rendered them impractical for this application. Our technology directly addresses these thermal losses and, for the first time, enables large-scale storage systems with high round-trip efficiency and high power density as well as low cost.
