The study cited (Brinson, Beebower and Hood, 1986) actually explains the variance of returns. Variance and performance are not the same! With careful planning we seek to achieve the optimal balance of returns for a client's level of risk. Broadly stated, diversification is the division of an investment between equities, fixed income and cash. Equities and fixed income can be broken down further into asset sub-classes such as large cap growth stocks, emerging markets stocks or treasury bonds.
