The Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts, based in El Monte, California, comprises 24 independent districts that collectively serve roughly 5.7 million people across Los Angeles County. It operates and maintains facilities to collect, treat, recycle, and dispose of wastewater and industrial wastes, turning waste streams into resources such as reclaimed water, energy, and recycled materials. The districts span about 820 square miles across 78 cities and unincorporated areas, while local jurisdictions handle sewer collection and solid-waste management. The districts cooperate under a Joint Administration Agreement, with an administrative staff headquartered near Whittier and each district governed by a board of directors drawn from the mayor of each city and the county supervisor chair for unincorporated areas. In November 2023, they launched a Tesla Model 3 fleet as part of modernization efforts.
