The Lown Institute is a small nonprofit think tank anchored in the Boston area. It aims to transform medical culture by preserving the doctor-patient relationship, ensuring patients receive care that aligns with their needs and preferences, and removing financial incentives from clinical decision-making. It was founded by Bernard Lown, MD, a renowned cardiologist and Nobel Peace Prize recipient, and supports the goal of compassionate, effective health care delivery. As a think tank, it analyzes health care practices and policies to inform clinicians, hospitals, and policymakers pursuing patient-centered care. The organization is based in Brookline, Massachusetts. In 2024, the Institute launched the Most Socially Responsible Hospitals list as part of its Hospitals Index.
