The Maine Island Trail Association is a nonprofit based in Portland, Maine, founded in 1988 to support the enjoyment and stewardship of Maine’s wild islands. It has built a coastal water trail that now includes more than 220 island and mainland sites, spanning the coast from New Hampshire to Canada. Access and land use are coordinated through handshake agreements with public and private landowners to balance recreational use with conservation. The organization offers a membership that gains access to events, volunteer opportunities, and informational resources such as the Maine Island Trail App and Guide detailing trail routes and site access. In September 2024, MITA announced the appointment of Ben Dougherty as executive director.
