Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA) is a nonprofit organization based in Unity, Maine, dedicated to advancing organic farming and gardening. As the oldest and largest state-level organic group in the United States, MOFGA seeks to support farmers and gardeners in growing organic food, protect the environment, and promote stewardship of natural resources, while also aiming to increase local food production and sustain rural communities. Its work emphasizes connecting healthy food with environmentally sound farming and the vitality of local ecosystems for consumers and communities alike. MOFGA operates through programs and partnerships, notably including MOFGA Certification Services LLC, which provides training, equity-focused initiatives, and grants to farmers. A concrete development in 2021 was the launch of the Journeyperson Program, which pairs beginning farmers with experienced mentors and offers seed discounts, educational funding, and access to shared equipment for two years. The organization has pursued capacity-building efforts such as long-term training programs and equity-focused training, and has collaborated with Maine Farmland Trust to offer grants to help farms cope with disruptions from the coronavirus pandemic.
