Manhattan School of Music, founded in 1918 by Janet Daniels Schenck, is a New York City–based institution offering undergraduate and graduate degrees in classical, jazz, and musical theatre. It serves more than 1,000 students across its degree programs and Precollege track, drawing participants from over 50 countries and nearly all U.S. states. Its faculty includes musicians from major ensembles such as the New York Philharmonic and the Met Orchestra, alongside leaders from jazz and Broadway communities. Beyond degree programs, MSM conducts outreach through its Arts-in-Education Program serving about 2,000 New York City schoolchildren, and a Distance Learning Program reaching another 2,000 students. Its Precollege program continues the institution’s founding emphasis, providing instruction to about 475 young musicians aged 5 to 18. In 2026, the school announced the appointment of Mei-Ann Chen as Director of Orchestral Activities and Chair of Conducting, effective July 1, 2026.
