Matter Architecture Practice is a Brooklyn-based design studio that operates across architecture, exhibition design, installations, furnishings, and civic-engagement initiatives in public spaces. Co-led by Sandra Wheeler and Alfred Zollinger, the practice emphasizes projects that connect built form with public interaction while exploring the social dimensions of the environment. The firm has earned professional recognition for its work, including top honors from the Society of Environmental Graphic Designers for exhibition design, a finalist spot in the PS1/MoMA Young Architects Program, and an Independent Research Project Grant from the New York State Council of the Arts. It has also won several competitions—Gimme Shelter: Urban Shade Structures for the City of Phoenix, Sukkah City, the Times Square Alliance Public Art Program, and the AIA New Practices New York—that reflect its engagement with public projects and innovative design. Its work has been featured in design and architecture publications such as FRAME, Interior Design, Architectural Record, the New York Times, and related volumes.
