MatWeb.com is a free online database that compiles material property data across metals, plastics, ceramics, lubricants, and advanced materials. It is designed to help engineers, scientists, designers, and contractors locate material properties quickly in a single place, regardless of material class. The service is based in Blacksburg, Virginia, and was founded in 1996 by Dale O. Kipp, Ph.D., and colleagues to provide a straightforward data resource through a searchable interface. It operates as an information service that supports design and analysis workflows with accessible material data. The database includes about 150,000 materials from more than 1,000 manufacturers and 1,200 unique properties. In 2020 it supported extensive usage, with 9 million data sheets served and 30 million page views, along with 5.9 million user sessions and 59,000 live registered users.
