The MBTA is a government-administered public transit agency that serves the greater Boston area as the operator or contractor of most bus, subway, commuter rail, and ferry services. It provides eight transit modes, including heavy rail, light rail, bus rapid transit, local and express buses, trackless trolley, commuter rail, commuter boat, and paratransit. As the largest transit provider in New England and the fifth largest in the United States, the MBTA serves 175 communities with about 4.7 million residents, and roughly three-quarters of Massachusetts residents live within its service area. The agency is headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts. The MBTA serves a broad rider base across urban Boston and surrounding communities, providing essential mobility across its network. A commemorative locomotive for the North Side Commuter lines, designed in-house and featuring U.S.-themed motifs, was launched in June 2026 to mark the occasion.
