Melody Erickson grew up in a very creative household. As a child in Salinas, CA, she was exposed to many different types of “arts & crafts” activities through her mother’s work as a Camp Fire Girl leader and youth group leader at their church. In the early 70’s, Melody’s family migrated to the Northeast, where she remained until her move to Nashville in 2001. As a young mother living in the Northeast, Melody, along with her two daughters, spent many summer vacations enjoying the beauty of the Adirondacks. Time spent in California and the Adirondacks, combined with Melody’s Cherokee heritage, have resulted in the strong southwestern and mountain influences seen in her leather designs. Nashville has proven to be the perfect backdrop for Melody’s earthy and primitive style. Her leather work is rough and raw. Each bag and journal is hand-cut, drilled and hand-stitched, then embellished with stone, glass, bone and/or wood beads. Erickson finds peace through creating. It is her creative mind that allows her to let go of any stress or discomfort she has been holding and simply “be.” She says, “Through art I am able to loosen up, lighten up and allow into my spirit all that is good!” When she’s not creating, Erickson enjoys gardening, sitting around the fire pit with friends and watching foreign (BBC television) detective shows on Hulu. Erickson is a member of Tennessee Craft, an organization supporting crafters and artists in Tennessee. She is currently the Secretary of Tennessee Craft-Midstate Chapter. She is also a member of Williamson County Art League.
