Membertou First Nation is an urban Mi’kmaw community surrounded by about 100,000 people in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality of Nova Scotia, Canada. It is part of the Mi’kmaw Nation and one of five Mi’kmaw communities within Unama’ki (Cape Breton). As an Indigenous government, Membertou achieved ISO 9001 certification in 2001, a milestone that has informed its governance and operations. The group owns and operates a set of community businesses, ten fully owned and two in partnership, including the Membertou Trade & Convention Centre, Membertou Market, Membertou Entertainment Centre, Membertou Business Centre, and the Hampton Inn. Its activities sit within the government administration space and reflect an economy broadened through aboriginal economic development initiatives that seek to build relationships with Canadian and international partners. A 2025 development involves a collaboration with Nourish Nova Scotia to support youth food leadership initiatives at Membertou.
