Mental Health Advocacy Services is a private nonprofit legal services organization based in Los Angeles, California, that provides free legal assistance to people with mental disabilities, primarily in Los Angeles County. It began in 1977 as a joint project of the Los Angeles County and Beverly Hills Bar Associations, later incorporating in 1979 with the Mental Health Association in California as its third sponsor. The organization emphasizes helping both children and adults obtain government benefits, protect civil rights, and combat discrimination. Beyond direct representation, MHAS serves as a community resource by offering training and technical assistance to lawyers, mental health professionals, consumer and family groups, and other advocates, and it participates in impact litigation to improve outcomes for people with mental disabilities. MHAS operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit focused on serving Los Angeles County. A notable recent development is the appointment of Liz Logsdon as Executive Director, effective January 26, 2026.
