Mentholatum was founded by Mr Albert A. Hyde in 1889 in Kansas, USA. Starting out as a small purveyor of soaps and toiletries, Mentholatum grew rapidly to become a global health and wellness company with a strong reputation and emphasis on quality and value. With over 100 years’ experience supporting people’s health, Mentholatum has become a leader in many categories including topical pain relief, joint health, muscle health – as well as skin-care and gut-health.

In 1988, the Mentholatum company was acquired by Rohto, a Japanese pharmaceuticals group. Committed to maintaining Mentholatum’s family values, and preserving its integrity in the pharmaceutical industry, Rohto has been able to drive continued innovation in the Mentholatum group of brands. 

Rohto is a major player in the Japanese pharmaceutical market with top selling products in the topical pain relief, eyecare and skincare categories. The combined ROHTO group of companies has established operations in 13 major markets, with marketing and distribution agreements in more than 150 countries globally.

Mentholatum’s flagship brand, Deep Heat, was first introduced to Australian consumers in 1959. In 1978 Mentholatum Australia was established and from our Australian head office based in Scoresby, Victoria, we now service a number of markets including Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific Islands and several Asian markets. All aspects of business are supported from the Scoresby site including TGA accredited manufacturing, regulatory affairs, operations, marketing, sales and finance. Many of our brands hold market leading positions across a diverse range of categories including topical pain relief, joint health and muscle health, as well as skin care and gut health.
