Merseyrail operates a self-contained rail network serving the Liverpool City Region from its base in Liverpool, England, United Kingdom. The network runs more than 600 daily services to 69 stations, including four underground hubs in the city centre, and carries over 90,000 passengers on an average weekday. In 2023 the network began introducing Stadler Class 777 trains intended to enhance safety and accessibility while increasing capacity and expanding space for bikes, buggies and passengers with mobility needs.

Merseyrail Electrics, formed in 2002, is a 50/50 joint venture between Serco and Transport UK operating under a 25-year concession with Merseytravel, the regional transport authority for Merseyside. The network has pursued environmental efficiency, reporting a 67% reduction in carbon emissions from 2014 to 2022 and a 34% decrease in stations’ electricity usage over the same period. In 2026 it engaged in partnerships to adjust timetables for events and to offer free rail travel to Chester on Cheshire Day, and it received the Golden Whistle Award for best performing regional railway for the eighth consecutive year.
