Metaio is a Munich-based software company operating in the mobile AR space. It was founded in 2003 by Thomas Alt and Peter Meier, evolving from an internal Volkswagen project that was supported by a German grant to bootstrap the business. With a small team, the company develops software platforms and consumer-oriented augmented reality experiences, while also enabling external developers to build AR solutions. In 2005, Metaio released an early consumer AR application that allowed users to visualize virtual furniture within images of their living spaces, and it subsequently launched a platform that opened AR development to third-party creators. It also introduced a browser-style AR experience for mobile devices and released an integrated mobile AR application known as Junaio. Between 2010 and 2012, the company demonstrated commercial 2-D markerless feature tracking on consumer devices for print and television and won the ISMAR Tracking Contest in 2011.
