The Metropolitan Black Bar Association (MBBA) is a New York City-based legal association representing African-American and other minority lawyers. Its stated purposes include advancing equality and excellence in justice, supporting the progress of Black and minority professionals, addressing legal issues affecting the city, and fostering legal study and development of young lawyers and law students. MBBA was founded on July 5, 1984, through the merger of the Harlem Lawyers Association (founded 1921) and the Bedford Stuyvesant Lawyers Association (founded 1933), and is described as one of the largest organizations of Black attorneys in New York State. The organization comprises mostly minority attorneys across law firms of all sizes, solo practitioners, government, academia, corporations, financial institutions, not-for-profit organizations, and the judiciary.
