The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) is Indonesia’s government body responsible for overseeing the country’s oil and gas, minerals, electricity, and renewable energy sectors, based in Jakarta. Its structure comprises the Secretariat General, the Inspectorate General, four Directorates General—Migas, Minerba, Ketenagalistrikan, and EBTKE—and three agencies: Geology, Balitbang, and Badiklat. ESDM pursues aims centered on ensuring energy and mineral security, expanding domestic access to energy and geologic information, and increasing value addition to energy and mineral resources while aligning with environmental sustainability. It also focuses on building domestic capability in energy management, mineral and geoscience governance, and human resource development within the ministry. In June 2026, the ministry highlighted efforts to develop smart grids and battery storage technologies, following a memorandum of understanding with Switzerland to optimize Indonesia’s solar energy potential.
