The Ministry of Justice - New Zealand is a government agency in the government administration sector, based in Wellington. It aims to deliver people-centred justice services and to ensure access to justice for all, while leading the justice sector in collaboration with the judiciary and agencies such as the New Zealand Police, the Department of Corrections, Crown Law, and the Serious Fraud Office. Led by Secretary for Justice and Chief Executive Andrew Kibblewhite, the ministry operates with a substantial workforce across New Zealand. Its remit spans court services for the Supreme Court through to the Maori Land Court, supports 29 tribunals and authorities, negotiates Treaty settlements, and runs the Public Defence Service and Legal Aid. It processes court-ordered fines, conducts about 450,000 criminal conviction history checks each year, oversees more than 150 pieces of legislation including the Official Information Act, and, in April 2026, launched the Legal Path to the Labour Market.
