MITAGS is a maritime training and simulation center with campuses in Baltimore and Seattle. Based on the East Coast in Linthicum Heights, Maryland, it offers more than 150 courses and is one of the few U.S. schools providing the full range of STCW training needed to advance from Ordinary Seafarer to Unlimited Master. Its origins lie in the MATES Program, a non-profit trust formed in 1968 by major Steamship Lines and the International Organization of Masters, Mates and Pilots to promote mariner professionalism. MITAGS serves mariners worldwide, including military and commercial crews, by delivering training and simulation that supports regulatory compliance and career progression. In 2024, the organization announced a partnership with the Washington State Department of Transportation to address shortages of licensed deck officers. This collaboration illustrates MITAGS' ongoing role in connecting maritime education with industry and public-sector needs within the transportation sector.
