MAHEC is a regional health care organization based in Asheville, North Carolina, founded in 1974, that combines patient care with education and research. It operates multiple patient-care sites across Western North Carolina, including Family Health, Ob/Gyn, and Dental Health, and functions as a Federally Qualified Health Center Look-Alike as well as the region's only high-risk obstetrics practice. The center also serves as a branch campus for UNC’s health professional schools, hosting the UNC Health Sciences at MAHEC and the UNC Gillings Master of Public Health program, and it is described as the state's largest Area Health Education Center. MAHEC focuses on building a pipeline of health professionals from early education through postgraduate training, offering internships, allied health programs, medical residencies, rural fellowships, and continuing medical education for thousands of participants annually. It serves a 16-county region in Western North Carolina and continues to expand its services, including initiatives such as launching a Mobile Pharmacy in 2025 to deliver medications directly to patients across the region.
