The Multidisciplinary Design Program (MDP) at the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor is a higher education initiative that provides experiential engineering design opportunities to students across the university. It offers more than 800 hands-on experiences annually, enabling students to apply classroom knowledge to real design challenges, build technical and professional skills, and collaborate across disciplines. The program organizes three pathways for student involvement: Sponsored Projects, Faculty Research Teams, and Student Organization Teams. Sponsored Projects run over two semesters with small student teams guided by faculty and sponsor mentors on industry or non-profit challenges, while Faculty Research Teams and Student Organization Teams provide additional structured participation options. MDP also assesses the effectiveness of its instructional methods to continually improve experiential opportunities and seeks partnerships with other university units.
