The Museum at Eldridge Street operates as a cultural institution in New York City, housed in the Eldridge Street Synagogue, a National Historic Landmark that has been carefully restored for public visitation. Opened in 1887, the synagogue was the first major house of worship in the United States built by Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe. Today it remains the only remaining marker of that era of Jewish migration on the Lower East Side that is accessible to the public. The museum offers exhibits, guided tours, public programs and educational activities that tell the story of Jewish immigrant life and explore architecture and historic preservation. It seeks to foster reflection on cultural continuity and to encourage collaboration and exchange among people of all faiths, heritages, and interests who visit to learn about Jewish New York.
