The Africa Center, formerly the Museum for African Art, is a New York-based cultural institution dedicated to the arts and cultures of Africa and the African Diaspora. Opened to the public in 1984, it is internationally recognized for organizing exhibitions and scholarly publications on historical and contemporary African art, and for programs that reflect the continent's diversity. It is planning a new 90,000-square-foot facility in a mixed-use development at the corner of Fifth Avenue and East 110th Street in New York, designed by Robert A.M. Until it opens, the center continues to develop and present traveling exhibitions and scholarly publications, and maintains a broad slate of public programs for adults, families, and schoolchildren at venues throughout New York City.
