Mystic Seaport Museum, based in Mystic, Connecticut, is the nation’s largest maritime museum. Founded in 1929 to preserve America’s seafaring heritage and to serve as a national center for research and education, it aims to foster an enduring connection to the American maritime experience. The 19-acre site along the Mystic River features a recreated 19th-century coastal village, a working shipyard, exhibit halls, and modern artifact storage, and it houses more than 500 historic watercraft, including four National Historic Landmark vessels such as the 1841 whaleship Charles W. Morgan. Its Collections Research Center provides access to more than 2 million artifacts and the G.W. Blunt White Library holds roughly 75,000 volumes.
