The Health and Medicine Division (HMD) is one of the seven divisions within the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, focusing on health and medicine policy and research. It brings together diverse expertise to inform evidence-based policy, advance research, develop solutions, and promote equity in health and medicine. A major portion of its work consists of consensus studies formally requested by federal agencies or mandated by Congress, complemented by informal roundtables, forums, and workshops that encourage cross-disciplinary dialogue.

The division relies on more than 2,000 volunteer experts and a staff of about 100 to sustain rigorous standards of accuracy and objectivity. Its work is organized around six boards: Global Health; Health Care Services; Health Sciences Policy; Population Health and Public Health Practice; Food and Nutrition; and Children, Youth, and Families. Based in Washington, DC, the division is part of the National Academies’ public policy ecosystem and serves federal agencies and independent organizations seeking evidence-based guidance to inform policy decisions on health challenges.
