The National Academy of Design advances American art and architecture by organizing exhibitions and educational programs. It serves as the United States’ leading honorary society for visual artists and architects, emphasizing the arts as a tool for education and as a focus of public life and cultural dialogue. Based in New York City, the organization traces its founding to 1825. Its National Academician membership gathers a diverse, intergenerational community of practitioners who support peers and the next generation of creatives; new members are inducted annually by current members through a non-applicant process. In 2021 the academy launched the virtual Eastman Johnson Catalogue Raisonné, a notable recent development.
