The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) is a U.S. honorific society of scholars conducting scientific and engineering research, dedicated to advancing science and technology and applying it to the public welfare. Founded in 1863 by President Abraham Lincoln, NAS was established to investigate, examine, and report on scientific or artistic subjects when requested by government departments and later expanded to include the National Research Council, the National Academy of Engineering, and the National Academy of Medicine, forming the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. Based in Washington, District of Columbia, NAS operates within the public policy arena, producing independent analyses and reports to inform government decisions and public welfare. It functions as part of the National Academies and engages with government and policy stakeholders, expanding its reach through collaborations and initiatives such as the Science20 initiative launched in 2026 under the U.S. chairmanship of the G20.
