The National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) is the largest association in the United States dedicated exclusively to social studies education. It acts as an umbrella organization for elementary, secondary, and college teachers across history, civics, geography, economics, political science, sociology, psychology, anthropology, and law-related education. Based in Silver Spring, Maryland, the group serves a broad network spanning all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and 69 foreign countries, while operating as a relatively small professional association. Its membership includes K-12 classroom teachers, college and university faculty, curriculum designers and specialists, social studies supervisors, and other leaders across the disciplines. Beyond programming and resources, NCSS has undertaken collaborative initiatives, such as the 2023 launch of Compelling Interviews for Civic Engagement with the Civic Life Project.
