The National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) serves as the primary scientific computing facility for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science, providing advanced computing and storage capabilities to support a broad portfolio of basic research. Its user base includes thousands of scientists who rely on NERSC to run simulations, analyses, and modeling across disciplines such as climate science, materials research, cosmology, high-energy physics, and biology, among others. The center aims to create an environment where these resources are reliable, secure, and readily accessible, complemented by professional intellectual services delivered by consultants who are themselves domain experts in fields like physics, chemistry, materials science, and astronomy. Through this, NERSC facilitates researchers’ ability to apply computational resources effectively to complex scientific problems. The organization emphasizes supporting discovery by combining large-scale computing with a collaborative development environment. Based in Berkeley, California, NERSC operates within the broader context of national scientific infrastructure and is continually expanding collaborations and programs, as illustrated by recent partnerships and initiatives in quantum computing and fusion energy simulations.
