The National Information Standards Organization (NISO) is a not-for-profit association based in Baltimore, Maryland, that works to advance standards governing the creation, management, and interchange of information so it can be trusted for research and learning. Operating within the information services sector, NISO brings together libraries, publishers, information aggregators, and other organizations that support learning and scholarship to develop and maintain information standards across their lifecycle. As a neutral intermediary, NISO coordinates cross-community efforts to align practices around the development, adoption, and governance of standards. Recent activity includes recognition for a NISO working group's CREC recommended practice, which received a 2026 SSP EPIC Gold Award in the Integrity Tools category. Its initiatives include pursuing a US National PID Strategy and work on ISO identifier standards.
