The Intramural Research Program (IRP) is the internal research arm of the National Institutes of Health, based in Bethesda, Maryland. It supports a large community of scientists, including about 1,200 Principal Investigators and more than 4,000 Postdoctoral Fellows, conducting basic, translational, and clinical research across the NIH. The IRP operates across more than 50 buildings on NIH campuses, featuring facilities for animal care, advanced imaging, and a 240-bed research hospital devoted to clinical protocols, as well as a neuroscience cluster to foster collaboration. External reviews help ensure that funding supports high-quality research. Notable scientific achievements include the discovery of fluoride to prevent tooth decay, the use of lithium to manage bipolar disorder, and vaccines against hepatitis, Haemophilus influenzae (HIB), and HPV.
