Based in Mobile, Alabama, the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf of Mexico centers on the Gulf of Mexico's maritime heritage, illuminating its historical, economic, and cultural significance for the region's coastal communities. It is positioned as the world’s first museum dedicated to Gulf Coast maritime traditions and among the United States’ few interactive maritime museums. The museum’s creation was a collaborative effort involving the City of Mobile alongside corporate, foundation, and individual supporters.

It serves visitors seeking education about the Gulf’s maritime past and its role in the region’s identity and economy, presenting exhibits and programs that convey this heritage. The project was undertaken through a partnership between the City of Mobile and the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf of Mexico, with support from various partners. In 2016, GulfQuest was recognized as Project of the Year by the Mobile Area Council of Engineers, reflecting its status as an interactive maritime museum development in the region.
