The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) is a semi-autonomous agency within the U.S. Department of Energy, created by Congress in 2000. Its core mission is to safeguard the nation by designing and delivering a safe, secure, and reliable U.S. nuclear stockpile, advance global security through nonproliferation and counterproliferation efforts, and coordinate responses to nuclear and radiological emergencies at home and abroad. The agency also provides nuclear propulsion to power the U.S. Navy and pursues transformative technologies to address emerging challenges. NNSA operates the Nuclear Security Enterprise, a network of headquarters sites and national laboratories as well as major facilities across the United States. Its footprint includes headquarters in Washington, DC; Gaithersburg, MD; and Albuquerque, NM, the Kansas City National Security Campus, and laboratories such as Lawrence Livermore, Los Alamos, and Sandia, plus sites like the Nevada National Security Site, Pantex Plant, Savannah River Site, and Y-12 National Security Complex. Based in Washington, DC, with a nationwide network, the organization employs several thousand people to support national security objectives.
