NOW-NYC is the founding chapter of the National Organization for Women and has operated in New York City since 1966. As a nonprofit, it advances the status of women and girls through public education, grassroots organizing, lobbying, action, and advocacy. Its work targets issues including ending violence against women, promoting workplace equity, safeguarding reproductive freedom, transforming media portrayals of women, and securing equality for LGBTQ people. Based in New York City, NOW-NYC is supported by its charitable sister organization, The Service Fund, which focuses on education and direct services for women. The Service Fund has been operating for the past 25 years and provides a free helpline along with free or low-cost legal and financial clinics addressing divorce, custody, employment discrimination, and financial empowerment, serving more than a thousand women annually across New York City's five boroughs and surrounding areas. NOW-NYC maintains a small professional staff to carry out its education, advocacy, and outreach efforts.
