The National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) advances knowledge of Earth's frozen realms by collecting, managing, and providing access to data on snow, ice, glaciers, and frozen ground. It supports researchers by offering data access tools and user assistance, enabling analysis of observations from both satellites and ground-based measurements. NSIDC operates within the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Science (CIRES) at the University of Colorado Boulder and is based in Boulder, Colorado. The center distributes more than 500 cryospheric data sets and collaborates with indigenous and international communities to broaden understanding of cryospheric change. In May 2026, NSIDC released a dataset on permafrost underground ice content along the Qinghai-Tibet Engineering Corridor, reflecting ongoing data expansion.
