NSSA is a government statutory body in Zimbabwe, created by the NSSA Act of 1989 to provide social security. It operates within the public administration sphere and is based in Harare, Harare. Its mandate covers public policy measures intended to protect individuals when livelihood and well-being are threatened by events such as sickness, workplace injuries, unemployment, invalidity, old age, retirement, or death, and it relies on pooling savings from periods of employment to fund benefits. It currently administers two schemes: the Pension and Other Benefits Scheme and the Accident Prevention and Workers’ Compensation Scheme, with groundwork underway to introduce additional schemes. NSSA's reach targets workers and the broader Zimbabwean population by providing social security coverage through its schemes. A development noted in May 2026 is NSSA's work on a maternity protection scheme intended to provide income support and social security cover for women, especially those in the informal sector.
