The National Trust for Scotland is an independent charity based in Edinburgh that protects, cares for, and shares Scotland’s natural and human heritage. It is the largest membership organization in Scotland and leads in conserving and promoting the nation’s treasured places and collections for current and future generations. Founded in 1931, the charity provides public access to, and in some cases shared ownership of, a wide range of sites—from ancient houses and battlefields to landscapes and coastlines. Its work spans Scotland, from Shetland to Dumfries and Galloway, across islands, coastlines, gardens and mountain landscapes. In 2026 the Trust launched a concept design for visitor facilities with external architecture firms to explore enhanced visitor experiences while continuing to rely on the involvement of members, volunteers and staff.
