The National Writers Union is a labor organization representing freelance writers and other creative workers across genres and formats. It provides services such as press passes, visa support, insurance access, and contract guidance, aiming to support members who work independently while sharing common professional challenges. The union seeks to empower a diverse community of writers, translators, editors, podcasters, illustrators, and other content creators by coordinating collective advocacy and practical resources. Based in New York City, the organization positions itself within the artists and writers industry as a union-focused association rather than a traditional professional association. The NWU emphasizes collaboration with international bodies and partner organizations to extend support to journalists and other freelancers, and it has engaged in several partnerships and policy initiatives since its founding.
