The Nebraska Humane Society is a nonprofit organization based in Omaha, Nebraska, founded in 1875, making it the fifth oldest Humane Society in the United States. It originated to protect both animals and children, but after the mid-1940s state agencies assumed child welfare duties, leaving NHS as the primary animal-protection body in the Omaha area. The organization provides education, sanctuary for animals, promotes adoptions and responsible pet ownership, and conducts animal control services to enforce laws for people and animals in much of the metro area.
