Founded in 1931, the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno is the state's only art museum accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. Its permanent collection is organized around four thematic areas: a Western-focused art collection, a collection of altered-landscape photographs, a contemporary art collection, and a body of work exploring labor and work ethic in American art. The current facility, opened in 2003 in downtown Reno, was designed by architect Will Bruder and encompasses four levels across about 70,000 square feet; the design draws on geological formations from the Black Rock Desert.
