New Buildings Institute is a nonprofit think tank focused on improving the energy performance of commercial buildings. It collaborates with governments, utilities, energy-efficiency advocates and building professionals to remove barriers to efficiency by promoting advanced design practices, improved technologies, and effective public policies and programs. The organization also develops guidance and resources to help individuals and organizations design and construct energy-efficient buildings. Based in Portland, Oregon, the institute operates as a small- to mid-sized nonprofit serving a broad market within the commercial building sector. Its role centers on coordinating cross-sector collaboration to address obstacles to energy efficiency and to share practical guidance for implementation. In early 2026, it helped launch the HVAC Change Lab, a collaborative initiative with the Center for Green Schools at the U.S. Green Building Council and the National Center on School Infrastructure to upgrade school HVAC systems and support health and safety outcomes.
