New England Farmers Union is a grass-roots advocacy organization focused on government relations for the region's agricultural and natural-resource communities. It represents family farmers, fishermen, foresters, nurserymen, and consumers across all six New England states. The group emphasizes membership-driven policy, aiming to maintain viable food and fiber enterprises while ensuring that harvesters and consumers benefit from national policy on food, forestry, fisheries, economic development and farming. Based in Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts, NEFU was founded in 2006 and is the youngest charter member of the National Farmers Union, a Washington, DC-based organization with a long history in agricultural advocacy. It operates as a small, member-driven organization that has fostered collaborations with regional groups such as the Cape Cod Cranberry Growers’ Association, the Cape Cod Commercial Hook Fishermen’s Association, the Neighboring Food Cooperative Association, and Organic Valley to bring issues to Congress and other leaders in Washington. In September 2021, NEFU launched the Fairness for Farmers campaign, reflecting ongoing policy-engagement activity.
