The New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority is a state agency that governs the Meadowlands District, a 30.4-square-mile region spanning parts of 14 municipalities in Bergen and Hudson counties. It serves as the planning and zoning authority for the district, regulating major industrial, commercial, and residential development through its Land Use Management Department, and it maintains protections for the district’s urban ecosystem via the Solid Waste and Natural Resources divisions. The agency also supports operations at the Meadowlands Sports Complex, which includes MetLife Stadium, the New Meadowlands Racetrack, and Meadowlands Arena, and it oversees long-term site developments such as American Dream Meadowlands.

Based in Lyndhurst, New Jersey, the NJSEA acts as the exclusive regional state authority for the Meadowlands District and collaborates with educational and research partners such as Rutgers University through the Meadowlands Environmental Research Institute and with Ramapo College through the Meadowlands Environment Center to study wetlands and provide environmental education to K-12 students. In December 2024, the board appointed Nick Mammano to serve as president and CEO, with the role taking effect January 1, 2025. Overall, the agency combines development governance with environmental stewardship to balance growth in the Meadowlands with protection of its wetlands and park network.
