The New York Youth Symphony is a New York City–based organization that provides advanced training and performance opportunities for talented young musicians. Its programs span orchestral and chamber music, conducting, composition, jazz, and musical theater songwriting, and it operates a newer ensemble known as Crescendo. Through its commissioning program named after Jon Deak, the organization has commissioned more than 170 works from young composers since 1984. Founded in 1963 as an orchestra to showcase the metropolitan area's gifted musicians aged 10 to 22, NYYS has since expanded to a broader set of programs and now performs at world-class venues such as Carnegie Hall and Jazz at Lincoln Center. The organization is based in New York City and is part of the music industry focused on youth education and performance; in 2024, it announced the appointment of John Kilkenny as executive director, effective March 1, 2024.
