Newport County: A Club Built on History, Resilience & Community Based in the heart of Newport, Newport County is a professional football club competing in EFL League Two. Known as the Exiles, the club has a rich history of resilience and community spirit. Founded in 1912 by football-loving steelworkers from Birmingham, Newport County’s amber colours were inspired by their ties to Wolverhampton Wanderers. Their early matches took place on the fields opposite their workplace, Lysaghts. In 1989, financial struggles led to the club’s collapse, but dedicated supporters quickly stepped in to rebuild. Just three months later, a fan-led revival saw the club reborn with the mission of restoring League football to Newport. Under the motto “Football with a Future,” it was financed and run by its supporters, laying the foundation for the club’s return to the professional ranks. A decade later, the club reclaimed its historic name—Newport County—marking a new chapter in its journey. Today, the Exiles continue to push forward, driven by ambition, resilience, and the unwavering support of their community.
