NFAIS is a global nonprofit membership organization in the information services field, sustained by volunteers. It serves the information community—the people and organizations that create, aggregate, organize, and provide access to authoritative, credible information—by supporting easier access and effective navigation. Its members range from database creators and publishers to libraries, hosting platforms, IT developers, and content-management providers, reflecting a cross-sector partnership among commercial, nonprofit, and government entities.

For more than five decades, the organization has promoted its members' success and provided a forum for education and advocacy around scholarly communication and information access. In 2019, it merged with the National Information Standards Organization (NISO), and it is based in Annapolis, Maryland.
